As soon as an arc builds up between the coated rod electrode and the workpiece, the core wire and the workpiece surface fuse to form a molten pool. Simultaneous melting of the coating forms the shielding gas and the slag, which protects the molten pool from the atmosphere. The slag cools and solidifies. This must be removed after completion of the weld seam (or before the second welding pass).
